LED lights for the garden on the windowsill
In recent years, the idea of growing fresh vegetables and succulent greens on the windowsill has been gaining ground. They won’t come up with something to get a full-fledged crop, and that it would not be unprofitable. One of the main problems in this regard is proper and inexpensive lighting, especially in winter.
Lighting for growing plants
To keep constant (or a significant period of time of the day) on ordinary incandescent bulbs is expensive, and they often burn out and also the light is not quite what the plant needs, and this affects the quality of the crop.
Similar problems with lighting also exist for those who are professionally engaged in growing vegetables in greenhouses, or for those who arrange a winter garden in their apartment or grow a large collection of cacti or tropical plants.
Therefore, it is no accident that both professionals and amateurs turned their attention to new technologies and, first of all, to LED lamps for growing plants, especially since when using them a number of interesting and useful effects were revealed.
Benefits of LED Lighting for Plant Lighting
LED lamps have a very long service life - up to 80 thousand hours, it is 10 years of continuous illumination or 20 if you simulate daylight hours. During this time, you would have to change about a hundred halogen lamps or 30 pieces of metal halide. It is better not to recall incandescent lamps at all.
LED downlights save electricity up to 50% compared to fluorescent energy-saving lamps and up to 85% compared to incandescent lamps. In addition, LED lights are difficult to break (glass is not used in the design), and they are safer (they are resistant to voltage surges and are characterized by low current consumption), and, most importantly, they are available with a different spectrum (red, blue), which is very important for the plant!
Using LED lights for growing plants
We will consider the use of LEDs for growing plants by the example of experiments with tomatoes, which have been carried out in Minsk for several years and have been successfully introduced in the CIS.
Seeds or seedlings are planted in containers. It is advisable to choose lianoid varieties of tomatoes. Such varieties include Kabardinsky, Yusupovsky, Delikates, Saratov rose, Hybrid-3, Miracle of the market, Pink large, Giant salad, Jubilee and others.
Above them low enough (they do not heat up) are LED lights or a special tape with LEDs in three colors: white, blue, red, in a 1: 1: 3 ratio.
And here we come to very important points. Red and blue are essential for photosynthesis, and blue accelerates growth and biomass, and red significantly increases the abundance of flowering and fruiting. White is also necessary, but if you do not go into details, it more provides a number of vital processes.
By turning on one or another LED lamp, changing the color gamut, you can achieve acceleration and adjustment of the growth and maturation processes.
LED technology allows you to get up to 50 fruits from one plant, most of which are large, weighing up to 300 g. Thus, the yield from one bush puts 5-6 kg, and this is a lot for the windowsill. In addition, one plant bears fruit up to six months.
In general, it turns out a weighty vegetable supplement to your table. Well, experienced cactus growers using LED lighting can achieve impressive success and achieve abundant flowering of their pets. Give it a try!
